Hola, he instalado Ubuntu 7.10 y todo va perfecto. Así que me he animado a instalar el VMD (Visualizador de moléculas en 3D) y también todo perfecto, pero, resulta que no se cómo hacer para arrancarlo!!!!!! aunque parezca mentira después de haver instalado todo, (la mitad a pelo, por provar).

Así que si alguien lo está utilizando o conoce a alguien que lo utilice, y me pueda ayudar????

Hola, quizás no sea tan común su uso,, y venga bien el link al VMD, también que expliques como o con que lo instalaste. Si no lo ves desde menú, podemos intentarlo desde consola.

De hecho esta instalación en particular la hice con, la cual saqué de Pascalin, usuario de Ubuntu-es.

Pues la instalación es, en principio, bastante sencilla. Sólo sigue estos pasos:

1. Bájate VMD, la versión binaria para Linux que corresponda con tu arquitectura.

2. Descomprime el archivo tar.gz, abre la terminal y cambiate al directorio recién creado. Por ejemplo:

cd vmd-1.8.6

3. Ejecuta el script de configuración:

./configure

4. Cambiate al directorio src:

cd src

5. Ejecuta como root el comando make con la opción install:

sudo make install

6. Listo. VMD ya debe estar instalado y listo para la ejecución:

vmd

Si VMD inicia sin problemas, ¡felicidades! Si no, una posibilidad es que te falte alguna dependencia. Por ejemplo, en mi PC, vmd me marcó el siguiente error:

error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Lo cual se solucionó con:

apt-cache search libstdc++

... aplicación del filtro visual ...

sudo apt-get install libstdc++5-3.3-pic

For quick installation of the binary distribution for Unix do the following:
1) Uncompress and untar the distribution into a working directory.
In this working directory, there are several subdirectories such
as bin, src, doc, data, as well as this README and a configure script.
Change to this working directory after the unpacking is complete.

2) Edit the file 'configure'; change the values for
the $install_library_dir and $install_bin_dir to a directory in
which vmd data files and executables should be installed, be sure
that you installing into a clean target directory and not overwriting
an existing version of VMD (which would otherwise give problems):

$install_bin_dir is the location of the startup script 'vmd'.
It should be located in the path of users interested in running VMD.

$install_library_dir is the location of all other VMD files.
This included the binary and helper scripts. It should not be
in the path.

3) A Makefile must be generated based on these configuration variables
by running "./configure".

4) After configuration is complete, cd to the src directory,
and type "make install". This will install VMD in the two
directories listed above. Note that running "make install"
twice will print error messages because you are attempting to
overwrite some read-only files. Similarly, if you have incorrectly
specified the target installation directories or attempt to overwrite
an existing VMD installation, you will get error messages.

5) When installed, type 'vmd' to start (make sure the
$install_bin_dir directory is in your path).

Required Libraries
------------------
VMD requires several libraries and programs for various of its functions.
In particular, it uses GL or OpenGL based 3-D rendering, and will require
that you have the appropriate GL or OpenGL libraries on your system.
Other programs are required by some of VMD's optional features.

Cuando hiciste:
sudo make install
te dió mensajes de error?

y cuando pones?:
vmd

con sudo no me dio ningún error, pero al teclar vmd me salio esto: bash: /usr/local/bin/vmd: /bin/csh: intérprete incorrecto: No existe el fichero ó directorio

> No existe el fichero ó directorio -> No lo encuentra...

Si ves en el post de arriba (te marque algunas pautas, favor ver),
menciona editar el archivo: configure
porque no lo abres y buscas a que directorio están apuntando:

$install_library_dir
$install_bin_dir

Así puedes verificas donde se encuentra vmd
revisa también el path.

mmhhhh... por ahi nada que ver, pero...

-bash: /usr/local/bin/vmd: /bin/csh: bad interpreter: No such file or directory

... me parece que lo que no esta encontrando es el shell.

Earion tenes instalado csh...?

jaja, tenés razón Merlin! antes dice "intérprete incorrecto"

Es razonable porque la misma aplicación corre en Unix, donde C Shell suele estar presente de cajón. Pero para las distro linux lo común es bash (gnu versión del bourne shell de Unix), incluido ubuntu.

Tal como sugiere Merlin, si instalas el Csh, vas por el buen camino.

Gracias, realmente era solo el Csh. Todo arreglado y funcionando.
