La Free Software Foundation (FSF) ha anunciado el lanzamiento de su propia versión de Linux, llamada gNewSense 1.0 y creada por Brian Brazil y Paul O'Malley.
Está basada en Ubuntu y el objetivo es crear una distribución completamente libre, sin "blobs" binarios en el Kernel y retirando el soft privativo de los repositorios, así como la herramienta de administración propietaria Launchpad de Ubuntu.
Estará disponible en LiveCD y las actualizaciones se efectuarán bajo la herramienta gráfica Ubiquity.

Las características:
gNewSense is derived from Ubuntu, and thus has most of the same functionality. There are a number of differences though.
* Firmware removed from kernel in main
* Restricted removed
* Ubuntu logos replaced
* Universe enabled by default
* emacs, bsdgames, nethack and build-essential part of the default install
Note our goal is to produce a fully free distribution, not to have as many features as possible.
